Examples for Inspiration

I like the website of the new movie theater Metrograph. It's a nice contrast to flashier, bolder websites that center around a huge banner-type image, etc. I like the retro look and the newspaper- or print-style format. I like that they use a carousel in a tasteful and effective way.

I like the website of the New York-based non-profit Transporation Alternatives in comparison to other less-effective non-profit websites (such as local animal shelters). I like the extra "donate" button in addition to the donate text link. I like the sections ("Get Involved"; "Issues") and how they invite the user to join the cause.

Drop-down menus can be ugly or clumsy, but I like how the website of the design museum Cooper Hewitt uses them.

I like the subtle difference between a typical newspaper or news magazine website and The Intercept. Instead of a masthead, they use a flyout menu. And I like the parallax (?) scrolling that occurs with headlines and images scrolling at differing rates.

What sort of website would be good for a redesign? The site of New York City music venue Cake Shop could use a better appearance and better-functioning layout. Note the calendar link in the navigation and redundant calendar link in the middle of the main image — both linking to an outside site.

Another possibility: to create a website for a musical artist drawing from elements of their social media presence, Bandcamp or SoundCloud page, etc.

Smaller nonprofits such as animal shelters often have less-than-stellar websites. An NYC pet adoption shelter such as Sean Casey Animal Rescue might be a fun subject for a redesign.
